You hit snooze without remembering because silencing an alarm is an automatic motor routine that runs before the memory-forming parts of your brain are back online. That groggy window is called sleep inertia. In a sleep-lab study of 20 adults, the median time from signal to fully awake was 52 seconds.
You set four alarms. You wake up at 9:40 to a phone showing that all four were dismissed, by somebody, with a thumb, in your bed. No memory of any of it. There is a particular flavor of dread in that moment, somewhere between confusion and being framed for a crime you did commit.
This is one of the most common things people quietly worry about, and it has a fairly ordinary explanation. Silencing an alarm is a small, practiced physical routine. Small practiced routines do not require you to be awake, and they certainly do not require you to be awake enough to form a memory.
What's actually happening when you snooze
Waking up is not a switch, it is a process, and different parts of the brain come back at different speeds. The parts handling movement and familiar sequences are online well before the parts handling judgment, planning, and the recording of new memories. That mismatch is the whole phenomenon. Your hand can find a button it has found a thousand times while the part of you that would think "wait, I have a train at eight" is still offline.
There is a useful number for how long that window lasts. In a sleep-lab study of 20 healthy adults, the median time from a wake-up signal firing to the person being fully awake was 52 seconds. Not instant. Close to a minute of being partly reachable and partly not, every single morning, with a phone within arm's reach. A lot can be dismissed in 52 seconds.
Why you don't remember doing it
Memory formation is one of the later functions to come back online. Behavior that happens before it does can be perfectly coordinated and still leave no trace, which is why the experience feels like the alarm simply never went off. It did. You were there. The recording equipment was not.

This is also why the argument "you clearly heard it, you turned it off" is not the checkmate it sounds like in a shared house. Turning it off is evidence that a sound reached a sleeping brain. It is not evidence that anybody was awake, and the person doing the accusing is usually right about the facts and wrong about what they mean.
Sleep inertia, plainly
The groggy, slow, faintly stupid stretch after waking has a name: sleep inertia. It is worst when you are pulled out of deep sleep, worse again when you are short on sleep to begin with, and it is the condition your decision-making is in when you decide nine more minutes is fine. Less morally loaded than the internet suggests, and more structurally annoying than most people realize.
The case against
Sleep taken in nine-minute installments after your alarm is fragmented and shallow, and every fresh wake-up restarts the inertia clock rather than working it off. There is also a training effect worth taking seriously. An alarm you ignore fifteen times a week becomes a sound your brain has learned is safe to file away, which is how people end up needing a louder alarm every few months.
The case for
If you snooze once, get up on the second one, and this has been stable for years, there is no crisis here. A short buffer before standing up suits some people. The problem is not the existence of a snooze button, it is the ladder: six alarms spaced five minutes apart, an hour of shredded sleep, and a morning that starts in deficit. On the nine minutes itself, the usual explanation is that mechanical clock gearing could not cleanly hit ten, the industry settled just under it, and digital clocks inherited a number nobody chose on purpose.

Breaking the loop
- Set one alarm at the real time: the ladder is what trains dismissal. One cue at the actual hour you must be up is easier for a half-asleep brain to take seriously than the fourth in a series.
- Add friction the sleepy version of you can't beat: across the room beats across the mattress. Standing up is the point, not the walk.
- Change the channel, not the volume: a different tone is still a tone. Light, movement, or something physical asks a different part of the system.
- Protect the first ninety seconds: if the phone comes with you, the wake-up ends there. Feet down, curtains open, then read whatever it is.

- Stop negotiating at 6 a.m.: the version of you deciding at that hour is impaired and biased toward the duvet. Make the decision the night before, and give it as little to overturn as possible.

Is hitting snooze actually bad for you?
