In the same houses, on the same nights, 100% of their parents woke — 95% of them within 32 seconds. That gap, between what wakes you and what wakes them, isn't a quirk of your household. It's one of the most consistently replicated findings in pediatric sleep science.

Why kids sleep so deep

Children spend a large share of the night in slow-wave sleep — the deepest stage, when the brain is doing its heaviest developmental work — and while they're in it, the door is essentially closed. In a 1983 study, researchers raised the volume to 123 decibels for sleeping children aged 8 to 12 — about 90 decibels louder than what those kids could hear while awake, roughly jet-engine territory. Not one child woke.

Two more findings complete the picture. A 1994 study of 36 subjects across four age bands found that in children, the sound needed to wake them was the same no matter what stage of sleep they were in — there is no easy window to aim for. And the way out is slow: in a study of 540 children aged 5 to 12 in EEG-confirmed deep sleep, waking ability improved by roughly 5% per year of age. Even at twelve, only 56% of kids got out of bed within a minute of an alarm.

Every one of these studies points the same direction: in children, volume is not the missing ingredient. What varies is the sleeper's age and the kind of signal.
